Fred Spruell Stephens, 94, of Savannah, Georgia, died Friday morning, March 24, 2017, at Pruitt/Health Savannah.
He was born on August 25, 1922, in Columbia, S. C. Mr. Stephens was a United States Air Force veteran. He served as an aircraft electrician stationed in the Philippine Islands and New Guinea from November 1942 to December 1945. In 1946 he purchased Commercial Electric Company and created S/W Enterprises, manufacturing equipment for the electric motor industry, both of which he operated with his brother-in-law. Mr. Stephens invented the Continuity Phase Method, a revolutionary process for rewinding electric motors that earned him the Exceptional Achievement and Service Award from the industry’s national association, the Electrical Apparatus Service Association. He was a member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church and served on the Vestry.
The funeral service will be held at 11 Tuesday at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. Interment will be in Bonaventure Cemetery.
