Jose Hilbert Bernal, son of pioneering Benson families, was born April 6, 1921, in Benson, Ariz., to Beatriz Ohnesorgen Bernal and Ysidro Bernal and died March 27, 2017.

He graduated from Benson Union High School in 1941 and was drafted into the Army. He served in the Signal Corp in New Guinea, Philippines and Japan as a radio operator during WWII. After the war, as many of his generation did, he used the GI bill to go to college. He went to Arizona State College in Tempe and graduated with Bachelor's degree in Arts and Education. He went on to be a teacher in the Parker, Ariz., school system teaching wood shop, drafting and Spanish until 1961 when he retired.

He enjoyed being with his family and going to the ranch he farmed with his brother, Albert Bernal. He and Albert had cattle and enjoyed growing corn, beans, zucchini and many other vegetables that the family enjoyed.

Hilbert is predeceased by his parents, Beatriz and Ysidro; wife, Carmen and brothers Albert and Armando and sisters Trini Ruiz and Beatriz adia [sic] and daughter-in-law, Mary Steelhammer Bernal. He is survived by his sister Lupe Vandermark and his sons, Hilbert Jr. (Vicki), Ernest, (Jan) William, (Diane) Robert, (Sherrie) all of Benson and Armando of Chandler, Ariz., and daughter Annette Brunenkant (Tim) of Marana. He is also survived by 26 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

A service at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic church was held April 3, 2017 with a luncheon at Community Presbyterian Fellowship Hall after graveside.

Many thanks to B. Blake of Bayada Home Health for the years of help she provided the family and thanks to Mary Ann young and Rhoda Brown of TMC Hospice services. Also thanks to Deacon Tom Adams and Father Neske. Burial was held at the High Street Cemetery with military honors.
