Elzena was the daughter of James Alvin Hough and Anniebell Lillie Robinson Hough. She graduated from Bethel High School. She worked for Cannon Mills until the beginning of World War II. During the war she worked for the War Department in Washington DC and New York City. She moved to Winston-Salem to work at the Veterans Administration where she stayed until retirement. She married Murray Kearns Fletcher on December 6, 1947 and they had been married 63 years at the time of his death.

She was preceded in death by her brothers Theodore Columbus Hough, Dewy Richard Hough, and Max Avery Hough; and her sisters-in law, Lucille Hough, Elizabeth Hough, and Pat Hough; and her son-in-law Dennis Cooper. She is survived by four children, her brother, six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and her sister-in-law.
