Robert G. High, 89, passed away at his home in Venice, Florida on Sunday, March 19, 2017. Born April 28, 1927 in Fort Smith, Arkansas to Ralph G. High and Willa Bessie Bond Westfall who preceded him in death. Robert is survived by his wife, Marie, of 17 years; son, James High and daughter, Diane High of Norfolk, Virginia; granddaughter, Laura (Doug) Gale and 4 great-grandchildren of Boise, Idaho; stepson, Stanton Doucette of Indiana; stepdaughter, Sherene Doucette of Portugal; sisters, Barbara Smith, and Franklin; and Nancy Mitchell, and Robert, all of Stonewood, WV; sister-in-law, Frances Baxter, and her husband, Bill of Venice, FL. Also, with love, Robert leaves behind special long-time friends; Patricia and Carl Smith and their children, Shawn and Laura, who he always considered his grandchildren. He is also survived by many loving in-laws, nieces, nephews, dear friends and his favorite dog, Lovie. Robert was predeceased by his first wife, Marvel Lou High and daughter, Linda Lou Hobbs. His brother, Edward High of Sumter, SC; sister, Donna June Enoch Benton of Winchester, VA; sister, Martha Ann Offutt of Martinsburg, WV; stepfather, Clarence Westfall and stepmother, Clara B High. Robert grew up in Clarksburg, West Virginia and always referred to it as his hometown. He joined the Navy in June 1944. He served 40 years and was honorably discharged as an Aviation Boatswain's Mate Master Chief (E9). Robert was a lifetime member of the Aviation Boatswain's Mates Association (ABMA). He was selected as the Association's LIVING LEGEND in 2010. Robert never tired of sharing his sea stories and love for his Navy life. After retiring from the Navy, Robert moved from Norfolk, Virginia to Venice, Florida and for many years continued his love for the service as a volunteer with the US Coast Guard Auxiliary in Venice. He loved to sail the beautiful waters in Venice on his sailboats, 'Lou Lou' and 'Bomar' with his fabulous crews. A memorial service will be held at Christ United Methodist Church, 1475A Center Rd, Venice, FL on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 10:00 AM. Burial will be at Sarasota National Cemetery at a later date. The family has requested in lieu of flowers a donation be made to Tidewell Hospice, 220 Wexford Blvd, Venice, FL, 34293 in memory of Robert G. High or the charity of your choice . Dad, Fair winds and following seas. Happily retired for 33 years. As you always said, you did beat the system! We love you!
