Don Elbert Maxwell was born December 28, 1925 in Taylor County, Iowa to Alvin Maxwell and Florence (Sleep) Maxwell. He grew up in Taylor County and graduated from Bedford High School in 1944. Don served his country in the United States Army during WWII from June 23, 1944 - April 23, 1946. He proudly served under General George S. Patton in Germany. Prior to going overseas he was united in marriage to Evelyn Ailshie on November 6, 1944 in Troy, Kansas. They were blessed with two children, Larry and Linda.
Following his service, he returned to Bedford and worked for Western Auto for a short time. He then became a lineman/service man for Iowa Power & Light retiring after thirty eight years. Don and Evelyn thoroughly enjoyed retirement. They did a lot of camping and traveling with their campers. They were avid fishermen. They traveled to many states including Arizona, Texas and Florida. Don also enjoyed trap shooting and was a member of the Amvets. He was also a member of the American Legion for over seventy years. Don’s family was very important to him and he enjoyed being with people and visiting.
Preceding Don in death were his parents; wife, Evelyn Maxwell; sisters, Margaret Clemens and Dorothy Byrns; great granddaughter, Hailey Grace Rowan.
Left to cherish his memory are his son, Larry Maxwell and Julie of Apache Junction, Arizona; daughter, Linda Rowan and husband Steve of Bedford, Iowa; grandchildren, Eric Maxwell and wife Kelly, Darin Maxwell, Brett Rowan and wife Angel and Dustin Rowan and wife Lacy; great grandchildren, Aidan and Mason Maxwell, Rush, Faith and Chasey Rowan, Brooklyn, Taten and Talyn Rowan; niece, Sharon Byrns of Clarinda and many friends.
