Mrs. Lela Dennis (Denny) Harris passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2017, at Well- Spring in Greensboro. Denny was born in Thomasville, NC, on May 7, 1941, to the late Benard and Isabel Harris and is the oldest of five children, including sisters Ann, Bell, and Macy and brother Ben. Denny’s parents owned The Boston Store, a Thomasville-based clothing store. When Denny was fifteen years old, her father died, leaving her mother to run the store. As a result, Denny assumed the household responsibilities of cooking, helping with her younger siblings, and taking care of the home. Denny graduated from Thomasville High School in 1959 and subsequently attended Saint Mary’s School in Raleigh. In 1960, Denny made her debut at the Terpsichorean Club Debutante Ball in Raleigh. Seven years later, Denny married Thomas “Tom” Harris on November 25, 1967, and the couple lived in Asheboro for 31 years. After leaving Asheboro, the Harrises lived in Florence, SC, and Morehead City, NC, before moving to Well-Spring of Greensboro in 2013. In addition to being a devoted spouse for almost fifty years, Denny was the loving mother of son Paul Harris, also of Greensboro. Denny was very sociable and never met a stranger. She worked for many years in the high-end clothing department at Belk in Asheboro and also helped the store’s buyers purchase clothing. She was very active with the Jaycettes and was also the modeling director for the Miss Randolph County pageant. A graveside memorial service will be held on Monday, March 27, 2017, at 2:00 pm at Holly Hill Memorial Park in Thomasville with Rev. Peggy Finch officiating.
