She grew up as a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Rowan County. She graduated from Woodleaf High School in 1944, then came to Hickory to attend Lenoir Rhyne College. After finishing school she started work at Fresh Air Super Market.
Lorene married Calvin Mull in August of 1947 at Bethany Lutheran Church where she had become a member when she moved to Hickory. They raised four children and now are the proud grandparents of seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren with one on the way. Lorene had been a loving supportive wife to Calvin for almost 70 years.
She had a strong foundation in love of family and service to church that began in her early years and continued throughout her life. She was always active in whatever was needed at the church or school. She was Sunday school teacher, Cub Scout den mother, Luther League volunteer and chaperone, Brownie leader, PTA officer, homeroom mother, and volleyball player extraordinaire!!! She was also a great neighborhood Mom. Ours was the kind of house where as there were always a couple of extra kids and they were always welcome. During all of these times she also worked helping her husband at home with the business when her children were small and eventually working at the store for many years. Her work in the community and her church continued long after her children grew up and left home. She has been a faithful member of Bethany by serving in the choir, the Church Council, Superintendent of the Sunday school, faithful cook on Wednesday nights, Welca member and officer, Stewardship committee, congregational life committee, teller, greeter, hospitality team, altar guild member, communion assistant, caregiver, Golden Ager President, Assistant Treasurer of finance committee, providing Christmas treat bags for the Sunday School children and various other volunteer jobs at the church. She was a wonderful example of a Christian wife, mother, grandmother, mother-in-law and friend.
She is survived by her husband, Calvin Mull, of Hickory; daughter, Linda Thornton (Larry), of Pennsylvania; son, Steve Mull (Jane), of Hickory; daughter, Becky Eichhorn (John), of Greensboro; son, William Mull (Dawn), of Maiden; sister, Francis Waller Painter, of Lincolnton; grandchildren, Dade and Jodi Thornton, Matt and Kristin Thornton, Addie Thornton, Jacob Eichhorn, Joseph and Vanessa Mull, Lindsey Mull and Andrew Mull; great-grandchildren, Avery, Calli, and Piper Thornton along with a baby boy due in May; step-grandchildren, Scott and Terri Gadd and Michael and Chris Gadd; step-great-grandchildren, Piper, Everett and Morgan.
