McDONOUGH — The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is looking into the death of a Henry County police officer whose body was discovered behind a McDonough Publix on Friday morning.
A fellow officer with the Henry County Police Department discovered the body at about 11:40 a.m in an undeveloped commercial area behind the grocery store, located on Ga. Highway 20 at Loop Road, according to police spokesman Capt. Mike Ireland.
The officer, later identified as Mike Reid, was found with a gunshot wound.
“It appears that it might be a self-inflicted gunshot; however, GBI is the lead investigative agency on this,” Ireland said Friday afternoon.
GBI could not offer any additional information Friday, according to spokesman Bahan Rich, except to confirm that the agency “is assisting at the request of Henry County PD.”
The Police Department announced Reid’s death on its official Facebook page Friday night.
“Any loss of life is unbearably sad and to lose one of our brothers or sisters in the police department, it weighs heavily on all of our hearts,” the department wrote. “Please keep his family, friends, and the police department in your thoughts and prayers during this time.”
