Geneieve Guthary, aka Jenny, was born March 5, 1943, at Knobel, Arkansas, the daughter of Cleve and Sarah (Eaton) Underwood. She passed from her earthly home on March 16, 2017 at Quail Ridge Living Center, Colcord, Oklahoma. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, March 25, 2017, at Wasson Funeral Home Chapel, Siloam Springs, Arkansas, with burial at Yell Cemetery, Robinson, Arkansas beside her beloved Charles.
She was reared in Northeastern Arkansas until she graduated from Knobel High School in 1952. She then went to Urbana, Illinois, and worked for a while before moving to St. Louis, Missouri and worked for AT&T while there. In 1954, she moved to Cushing, Oklahoma to be near her parents who had moved there from Arkansas.
In 1963, she moved to Baron, Oklahoma and began her education at Northeastern State University. She received her BSE degree in August on a Saturday morning and began teaching grades 1-4 at Baron on Monday morning. She continued her education and received her MSE in July, 1972.
At the end of the 1967-68 school year, Baron consolidated with Westville School and Jenny Went there as an elementary teacher. She remained at Westville Elementary until her retirement in 1993, but continued at Westville as a tutor in the Migrant Education program, ending her career in 2005, due to her husband’s illness, with a total of 38 years teaching.
She, lovingly, referred to Westville School as her “home and family” and nothing pleased her more, until her death, to have one of her former students walk up to her with a big “bear hug”.
Her hobbies were: working with children, enjoying her home and computer, and writing poetry.
March 19, 1976, she married Charles H. Guthary, retired Msgt, USAF. They spent their lives together in the Westville area until 2011,when they sold their home and moved to Revenwood Addition in Siloam Springs, Arkansas.
While teaching, Jenny was a member of local, county, and state education associations and for 33 years was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa (an Honorary International Sorority) before resigning due to health problems. After her retirement, she remained a member of both the Adair County and Oklahoma State Retired Educators. She was a member of Westville First United Methodist Church and Air Force Sgt. Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by both parents and her husband Charles. She leaves to remember her life her step daughter Lori Hines and husband Ken; 2 granddaughters, Kristen and Lauren Hines; great grandson Keegan Cross; 2 brothers-in-law Shelby and wife Jane of Scottsdale, Arizona and Barry of Cambridge, Massachusetts; 2 nieces Sherry Reeves and husband Ben of Alabama and Tammy Rasmussen and husband Rick of Maryland; and a great niece Sydney Reeves of Alabama; also a host of relatives and friends whom Jenny loved dearly.
