Gwinnett County K-9 officer Aryn was buried Wednesday afternoon, honored with the barks of fellow K-9s, bagpipes and the attendance of more than 100 police officers. Aryn, who worked for the Police Department for seven years, was euthanized Jan. 24 due to complications with a terminal illness.

Aryn was retired from the department after he was shot in the line of duty in 2004. The beloved 11-year-old dog was buried in the Garden of Honor at the Oak Rest Pet Gardens run by Deceased Pet Care in Bethlehem following a 2 p.m. memorial service attended by the dog's family and handler. Aryn was shot in 2004 when he and his handler were searching for a double homicide suspect. The suspect shot Aryn, wounding him in the leg and sternum.

K-9 Aryn survived his injuries and was later named Officer of the Year 2004 by the Rotary Club of Gwinnett County and the Gwinnett County Police Department. He also received two Medals of Valor and a Purple Heart from the Fraternal Order of Police.

"They are family members, just as integrated as a child, it's hard to explain what these dogs mean. Most don't have to rely on their family pet to save their lives."
