(Aledo Democrat - January 21, 1896)
Mrs. Jessie Clare Barrie (nee Swezy) was born in Keithsburg, Illinois, July 15, 1856, and died at the maternal home in this city January 18, 1896, aged 39 years, 5 months and 2 days. She was married to R. G. Barrie June 19, 1884, who preceded her "to that bourne whence no traveler returns," in the year 1888. The fruit of this happy union was one son, Roy, who survives his father and his mother in his orphanage, at the home of his uncle, Huber M. Swezy, of the News.
In 1889 Mrs. Barrie gave her heart to the Lord and united with the Presbyterian church this city, in the communion and fellowship of which she lived and died an honored and consecrated member. Her life as a member of the home from which she came, as well as that in her own married relations, was one of marked devotion and excellence. As a wife and mother her home and its loved ones claimed her sweetest and purest affection. She adorned her profession with a beautiful walk and conversation becoming the Gospel. She was one of the sweetest singers of our city and her sun has gone down while it was yet day.
She was a sufferer for four years of her closing life, but not a murmer escaped her lips, none more patient than she, a noble example of the patience of a Saint. But the Master had a higher claim upon her than the most sacred of human relationships.
The best medical attendance, the prayerful watchings and kindest ministrations of mother and brother and the loved of home failed to keep her here. A pulmonary affection slowly but surely did its work, and she has fallen in that sweet sleep from which none ever wake to weep.
Her funeral obsequies took place from the home of her mother, Mrs. M. J. Swezy, on Tuesday, in the presence of a large concourse of sympathizing and sorrowing friends, and the remains laid away in Green Mound cemetery to await the resurrection of the just. Her end was sweet peace.
