Professional Football Player. Born William Clay Matthews, he played the offensive tackle for the National Football League's San Francisco 49ers for four seasons (1950, 1953-1955). He played football collegiately at Georgia Tech and was selected in the 25th round of the 1949 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams. He never played for them and the next year, joined the San Francisco 49ers. He played for them for one year before joining the United States Army and going to Korea as part of the 82nd Airborne Division. In 1953 he rejoined the 49ers and played for them for three more seasons. In his later years, he became a patriarch of a football family as his two sons Clay Jr. and Bruce were both stars in the National Football League and five grandsons also have played in the NFL.
