Celia McCoy Johnson, 79, formerly of Gastonia, passed away on Monday, March 20, 2017. Born August 10, 1937 in Craven County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Herbert Ray McCoy and Lonie Hawkins McCoy.
Mrs. Johnson was the Co-Pastor and Director of Music at Evangel Assembly of God in Gastonia. She was also the director and writer for the annual church Easter Pageant and was well known for her beautiful singing voice.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Johnson was preceded in death by her son, Raymond Lashley Johnson and a brother, Dalton E. McCoy.
Mrs. Johnson is survived by her beloved husband of 62 years, Rev. Rufus Johnson, Jr.; children and spouses, Tommy Johnson (Jackie), Debbie Reeder (Keith) and Dorothy Yorty (Bob); grandchildren, Mindy Powell, Patrick Johnson, Logan Reeder, Natalie Reeder, Jordan Gulbronson, Celine Gulbronson, Brad Yorty and Kim Swigert; great-grandchildren, Jeremy Powell, Joshua Johnson, Brooke Johnson, Jenna Yorty, Jada Yorty, Brennon Swigert, Ava Swigert, Reagan Swigert, Jacob Jones and Chris Swigert.
Family and friends of Mrs. Johnson are invited to attend her visitation beginning at 1:00 PM Saturday at Generation Church, 625 Neal Hawkins Road, Gastonia with her funeral service to follow at 3:00 PM in the church sanctuary. Her daughter, Pastor Dorothy Yorty and Rev. Lewis Gunn, Jr. will officiate. Burial will follow in Oakwood Cemetery.
