Parents: Claudius and Estelle (Bush) Thayer.

Daughter of Claudius and Estelle Thayer. Eugenia went to Burnham School, North Hampton, Massachusetts, and on to Smith College. Her father, also a Latin scholar, sent her translations of Liby and Vergil, and this poem which he had written: She majors in the Latin tongue By Livy toned, by Vergil sung; Therefore her dad assumes his spects, And mounts his horse to charge the text, Now be it registered right here, As on a movie canvas clear, Those ponies that you go and buy Are made to sell and not to try; And he who rides one, in a trice Is helpless as a hog on ice. Certainly, the poem shows his insight into human frailties and his gentle humor. Once he reminded Eugenia that one day her granddaughter would ask for help in translation, and she would then appreciate the forms and choice expressions from Vergil that have always remained in her diction. It is indeed tragic that Eugenia died young, never having had the pleasures of leading a young daughter to the experience of Latin literature. Extracted from Marion County History, vol. 3, 1957 p. 41-44
