Psychotherapist, Author. Know for his groundbreaking work in the field of Psychotherapy, he is widely credited with coining the term "homophobia", when describing the negative attitude of society towards homosexuals. Born George Henry Weinberg, into a Jewish family, his father an attorney abandoned the family when George was an infant. George's mother was left to provide for him and worked as a legal secretary. He attained a Master's degree in English Literature from New York University and later studied Mathematics at Courant Institute. He received his doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Columbia University and during the mid 1960s, he wrote a number of articles for publications which included the term "homophobia". This was followed up with his 1972 book "Society and the Healthy Homosexual" which detailed the harm caused by prejudice against homosexuals. Further books include "The Action Approach" (1974), "Self Creation" (1978) and "Numberland" (1987); the later was the result of his interest in Mathematics. Additionally, he wrote the books "Shakespeare on Love" (1991) and "Will Power! Using Shakespeare's Insight to Transform Your Life" (1996), which was the result of his fondness for English Literature. He died from cancer.
