Glenn was the 2nd child of 4 born to James and Ellen Oakes in or near the early pioneer town of Newville in the foothills of the Sacramento Valley.
In the Orick's book of compiled newspaper articles, young Glenn is mentioned moving with his parents and 2 siblings around 1906 from Newville in the Sacramento Valley to Gurneyville. "Glen" is mentioned again 1931 driving one of the trucks in the family move from Live Oak to Orick on the coast. He also was a partner with his brother Ralph in the "Coffin Mill" south of Orick, this being probably in the early 1940's. He also was known to spend time with his brother Ralph on the Oakes mining claim on Nordheimer Creek, a tributary of the Salmon River east of Orleans, California. In 1982 and 1983 he is mentioned as attending Senior Citizen gatherings in Orick and as attending from McKinleyville.
A family member reported that during the decline of Glenn's last years, his daughter-in-law Dolores cared for him in McKinleyville. When his health declined further, she had to put him in a "rest home" in Eureka. It was there that he died.
A few sources (e.g., Orick book) spell his first name with one "n" however most sources spell his given name "Glenn."

His death notice appeared in Eureka's Times-Standard newspaper on 29 Jan 1998, p. C4:
