Ruth M Heard Wright passed away peacefully on March 4, 2017 in Spokane, Washington. As an adult, she lived many years in Riverside, California, and had lots of family and friends in the area. As a widow, she relocated to Spokane to be close to her son and family.

Ruth was born on February 11, 1929. Her parents were Waldie and Ella (McWatters) Heard and her older brother was David Heard. Her father was a Master stone mason, and the family moved often due to his job. Ruth was born in Ponca City, OK because at the time her father was the Foreman stone mason for a 55-room Italian Renaissance Villa and National Landmark called the Marland Mansion.

Ruth’s education included: kindergarten in Ladysmith, British Columbia; elementary school in Creswell, OR; Fremont Elementary, Central Junior High, and graduation from Poly High all in Riverside, CA. Ruth received an AA from Riverside Community College. She participated in a work study program that led to a job with Security Pacific Bank. Ruth began as a teller, and ultimately became an Officer with the bank before she retired 30 years later.

Ruth met William James “Willie” Wright, a young Airman from March Air Force Base, at Fairmount Park in Riverside and they decided to go to a local baseball game together. Willie was crew on a B-29 Superfortress; he flew 27 missions over Korea during the Korean War. Ruth and Willie were married at Riverside First Baptist Church in December of 1950.

In May 1952, having survived the Korean War, and being promoted to Crew Chief on the B-29, Willie was involved in a devestating plane crash at Riverside’s March AFB. Willie survived but was seriously injured. He was in the Burn Ward at the base hospital when Ruth delivered their only child in the same hospital. His first time out of bed was an in-hospital trip to the nursery to see his newborn son.

Ruth lovingly cared for both husband and son, plus she worked full time to provide an income. She was a woman of great faith and a stalwart member of the Riverside First Baptist Church. She sang in the choir for many years, taught 4th grade Sunday School, worked in the office, and contributed her time and effort to the church in endless ways. Ruth was active in the American Baptist Women’s Ministries, and supported Baptist missionary efforts. She was a happy member of the Red Hat Society.

Ruth was an avid gardener, growing roses, oranges and tomatoes even when she lived in her mobile home. She had a Heart’s Desire rose planted where ever she lived. She loved to decorate her home for Christmas and their golf cart for the Annual 4th of July Park Parade. Ruth loved her two grandsons and always had cookies available for their visits. She had the great pleasure of holding the wriggly young great-grandson Griffin Wright on her lap in her later years.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents Ella and Waldie Heard, her beloved husband William Wright, and her brother David Heard. She is survived by her son Ron and his wife Marilyn Wright, grandson Scott Wright, grandson James and his wife Jennifer Wright, and their son, her dear great grandson Griffin Wright. Additional members of her extended family are Kathy Heard Irving, David Heard Jr., Pam Heard Pousson, Matthew Heard, and Barbara Heard with their families.

It is certain that she was welcomed home by the Lord with the words “Well done thou good and faithful servant!”

Ruth’s funeral service was at Riverside First Baptist Church on Wednesday, March 29, 2017, at 11:00 am. Pastor Lutz conducted the service. Ruth was interred with her husband at Riverside National Cemetery.
