Army Cpl. Stephen D. Shannon, 21, of Guttenberg, Iowa; assigned to the 397th Engineer Battalion, Wausau, Wis.; died Jan. 31, in Balad, Iraq, of wounds suffered when his vehicle was hit by a rocket during combat operations Jan. 30 in Ramadi. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Jim Shannon; an uncle, Jerry Shannon; a cousin, Laura Gastineau; his great-grandparents, Joe and Hattie Starovasnik; and his great-grandmothers, Mae Longosz and Catherine Clarkin.

Army Corporal Stephen Daniel Shannon, age 21, of Guttenberg, IA, died Wednesday, January 31, 2007, at Balad, Iraq. He was born the son of Dan and Joan (Barud) Shannon, May 6, 1985, in Maquoketa, Iowa. Stephen graduated from the Clayton Ridge High School in 2003, attended University of Northern Iowa, and served his country in the United States Army, 397th Combat Engineers in Dodgeville, Wisconsin. He was an artist, musician, and enjoyed hunting, Star Wars, Star Trek, and computer games. Friends and family will remember him for his sense of humor. Those left to cherish his memory are his parents, Joan and Dan, two sisters, Kathleen Shannon, and Molly Shannon, two brothers, Patrick Shannon and Jack Shannon of Guttenberg, maternal grandparents, Ed and Lois Barud of Dubuque, paternal grandparents, Clifford and Sylvia Davenport of Galena, and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Jim Shannon, uncle, Jerry Shannon, cousin, Laura Gastineau, great-grandparents, Joe and Hattie Starovasnik, and great-grandmothers, Mae Longosz and Catherine Clarkin.

In lieu of FLOWERS memorials may be sent to the Stephen Shannon Memorial/Clayton Ridge Athletic Field Fund, memorials may be sent to Security State Bank or Valley State Bank in Guttenberg, The Garnavillo Savings Bank or Alliant Credit Union in Dubuque Iowa.
