Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 703 Lee Avenue, Lafayette for Mr. Albert Pike Agnew, Sr., 84, who passed away peacefully on Monday, June 21, 2010 at his home in Lafayette.
Interment will follow in Fountain Memorial Cemetery in Lafayette.
Reverend Jan C. Holloway, Senior Pastor at First United Methodist Church in Lafayette, will officiate.
Albert, known affectionately to family and friends as "Buddy", was born Wednesday, November 4, 1925 in Jonesboro, AR. Buddy attended school in Little Rock, AR until the age of ten, and his most formative years were spent in Hammond, LA. He graduated from high school in Wichita Falls, TX, and in March of 1943, at the age of seventeen, he joined the U.S. Army.
Buddy was a proud WWII veteran, and was assigned to the 97th Infantry Division where he saw combat action in Czechoslovakia. He earned his release from active duty in 1946 while serving in post-surrender Japan. Buddy was highly decorated and was awarded a Bronze Star medal for meritorious performance in battle, the European Theater Medal with star signifying combat experience, the Infantry Badge with leaf cluster signifying engagement with the enemy, the Pacific Theater Medal awarded for service in Japan, a Good Conduct Medal, the Victory Medal, and the American Theater Medal.
After the war, Buddy continued his education and graduated from photography school in Memphis, TN. He then attended Southwestern Louisiana Institute (SLI), now UL-Lafayette, where he met his beloved wife-to-be, Geraldine Laing. Buddy played trumpet in the marching and concert bands while at SLI, and he later played in Lafayette's Community Concert Band. After marrying, Buddy and Geraldine lived in Lafayette and Hammond and eventually moved to New Orleans for ten years. While there, Buddy began a successful career as a draftsman with Conoco and worked in their Exploration/Land Department for over 33 years.
After returning to Lafayette, Buddy was a very active member of the First United Methodist Church in Lafayette, where he and his wife served as youth fellowship counselors and where Buddy belonged to First Methodist's Men's Club. The Agnews also volunteered for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Acadiana, where they were recognized as the oldest couple to serve as foster grandparents. Buddy was a member of the Acadiana Car Club and was passionate about his 1926 Model T. Recently, he was an attendee on the esteemed WWII Veteran Honor Air Flight, with his grandson Aaron as "Guardian".
One of Buddy’s war comrades, Calvin Hannawalt, after fifty years apart, recently commented, “Always a gentleman. . .” Above all, Buddy adored his wife, daughter and grandchildren and most loved spending time with them. He will be deeply missed.
Albert, Sr. is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Geraldine (Jerry) Laing Agnew, of Lafayette; his only daughter, Margaret Agnew Landry and her husband, Rock of Carencro; his two grandsons, Jacob Landry and his wife, Crystal of Scott and Aaron Pike Landry of Carencro, LA; one great-grandson, Ryker Landry of Scott; one great-granddaughter, Reese Landry, also of Scott; his sister-in-law Jimmie Foley and her husband, Thomas Jr. of Greenwell Springs, LA; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents Howard Boody Agnew, of Vincennes, IN and the former Katherine Soules, of St. Louis, MO; his infant son Albert Pike Agnew, Jr.; and his only sibling Grace Agnew Gregoire.
The family requests that visiting hours at First United Methodist Church in Lafayette be observed on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and resume on Wednesday, June 23, 2010 at the church from 9:00 a.m. until time of services.
Pallbearers will be Jacob Landry, Aaron Landry, Thomas Foley, Jr., Wilton Felix, Michael Foley and Thomas Foley, III.
