Constance Mobley Spiro, educator, wife, mother and friend, passed away late Tuesday evening, January 4, 2011, after a long illness. She was 67 years old. Her husband, Robert Douglas Spiro, Sr. (deceased), was a school psychologist. They were married for 35 years.

The daughter of Nathan Mobley Sr., former director of Chubb & Son Insurance, and Eleanor Smith, former national treasurer of the Girl Scouts of America, Constance was a descendant of William Brewster of the Mayflower and of the Shiverick family, which built clipper ships on Cape Cod. She had two siblings: a brother, Nathan “Bob” Mobley Sr., an educator, and a sister, Anne Ramsey, an Academy Award nominated actress (deceased).

Constance spent her childhood in Greenwich, Connecticut. After she was graduated from Greenwich Country Day School and Rosemary Hall, she obtained a B.A. from Scripps College in 1965 and subsequently completed studies at the School for Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins in Bologna, Italy. Speaking four languages enabled her to travel widely, and she counted Turkey, Italy, Russia, France, and Belgium as among some of her favorite destinations.

After her marriage to Robert, Constance settled in North Hollywood, California, where she was active in several community organizations, including leadership positions in the Parent Teacher Association and the Cub Scouts. She is survived by five children, including three from her husband’s first marriage and two from her union with Robert: Claudia, a math professor; Andrew; Mary, an English professor; Douglas, a banker; and Anne-Constance, an energy consultant. A sixth child, Nicholas, died as an infant.

Constance enjoyed work as a librarian and teachers’ aide at the local elementary school that her children attended. Other interests included history, cooking, art, music, politics and theology.
A memorial mass will be held Saturday, January 15, 2011, at 10AM at St. Jane Frances de Chantal. The church is located on Victory Blvd. just West of Coldwater Canyon Avenue. There will be a lunch reception immediately following, at Anoush Banquet Hall at 6730 Laurel Canyon Blvd. It is at the corner of Laurel Canyon Blvd. and Vanowen Street.
