Martin W. Keller, age 96, of Peshtigo, WI was taken to his Eternal Home on Monday, March 20, 2017, at Bay Area Medical Center of Marinette, WI. Martin was born on April 3, 1920, in Chicago, Illinois, the son of the late Walter and Emma (Heizman) Keller.
He was received as a child of God through the waters of Holy Baptism in Chicago. After being instructed in the truths of the Christian faith by Pastor Kurt Geyer at Zion Lutheran Church in Peshtigo, his baptismal vows were confirmed on April 14, 1935.
The former Alice Mae Meunier became Martin's wife on November 26, 1944, at Salem Lutheran Church in Escanaba, Michigan; she preceded him in death on August 27, 1971.
On April 15, 1979, the former Hazel Gypp became his wife at St. James Lutheran Church in Marinette, Wisconsin; she preceded him in death on February 28, 2009.
Graduating from Peshtigo High School in 1939,
Martin served in the United States Air Corps during World War II. Following his service to the nation, Martin returned to Peshtigo and began his career at Badger Paper Mills. He retired in 1982 as Assistant Supervisor of the Finishing and Shipping Rooms.
Well-known for his extensive collection of beer cans and brewery memorabilia, he also enjoyed golf, bowling, woodworking and gardening. Martin was also on the committee that brought Little League Baseball to Peshtigo in 1960.
In 2002 he was elected to the M & M Bowling Association Hall of Fame. He served on the Board of Directors of the Kramer Golf Club since its inception.
In October of 1985, former Mayor Henry Drees appointed Martin to the Peshtigo Non-Profit Housing Commission (Riverview Apartments) and the Peshtigo Housing Authority (Woodland Manor and Park Manor). He served until 2007. For ten years he also served as president of the Peshtigo Senior Center. Martin was very proud of his Peshtigo roots.
The majority of Martin's adult life was focused upon his Christian faith and Zion Ev. Lutheran Church. Over the years he served as president, vice-president, treasurer (over 25 years), custodian, captain of the dart ball team, and was involved in a myriad of committees and church projects. The decision to erect a new sanctuary for Zion congregation was made during his tenure as President and he enthusiastically served on the Building Committee during the new church's construction. Martin was a devoted servant of the Lord.
Survivors include his son, Michael E. Keller, Appleton, WI;
his daughter, Karen K. (Allen) England, Peshtigo, WI
and his two grandsons: Tyler (Heidi) England and their son, Hudson; and Justin (Lisa) England, and their sons, twins Parker and Carter, and Sawyer.
Also, many nieces and nephews.
Martin is further survived by 2nd wife Hazel's children, Jerry (Mary) Gypp, Sandy Gypp, Leonard (JeriAnn) Gypp, Toni Luedtke, and their families.
He was preceded in death by his brother Bernhard Keller in 2007.
Funeral services for Martin will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, March 25, 2017, at ZION EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH, 221 South Ellis Avenue, Peshtigo, with Pastor Luke Myslik officiating.
