Dorothy was born in Corning, New York on June 18, 1909 at Corning Hospital to Lester L. and Louie Cole Kniffin. She met Charles in high school and they both graduated in 1928 from Northside High School. Her love of music sent her to Crouse College of Music at Syracuse University where she majored in voice, piano, organ and playing the harp; but her love for Charles won and she left college to marry him on August 25, 1929 in Corning, a love story that we have all been blessed to share. Their struggles through the Great Depression were stories we heard many times. Her love of music always played an important and everlasting part of her life. Dorothy served as the Junior Choir Director at the First Congregational Church and also sang in the choir and played the organ. An excellent seamstress, she made prom dresses, coats and many of our school clothes and, later, flannel night shirts for some of her great-grandchildren. In 1952 our parents bought their piece of heaven on West Bluff Drive at Keuka lake and built a cottage that holds so many memories for her family. It is the place where all are welcome and to which Dorothy and Charles retired in 1973 after selling their long-time home at 269 Cayuta Street.
She is survived by four children: Charles Reynolds of Alpine, NY, Marilyn Reynolds-Straub of Roseland, VA, Karen (Larry) Gorges of Caton, NY, Susan (Robert) Rullman of Waynesboro, VA; grandchildren: Danny Reynolds, David Reynolds, Debbie Baker, Mike (Denise) Reynolds, Dawn Lynn Straub, Rhonda (Gary) Morgan, Suzzette (Greg) Fromkin, Andrew (Eloise) Gorges, Amy (Todd) Carpenter, Aaron (Michele) Gorges, Shelly (Kosta) Glavas, Kristen (Jason) Coulter-Clemmons; great-grandchildren: Marshall and Lindsey Reynolds, Robert (Christine) Reynolds, Justin (Wendy) Smith, Hannah Baker, Becca and Lisa Reynolds, Lepha and Whitney Morgan, Seth, Luke and Brooke Fromkin, Elizibeth (Heather) Gorges, Andrew (Tia) Gorges, Jr., Caleb, Jacob, Samuel, Jonathan, Noah, Micah and Eli Carpenter, Nate, Hayley, Madison and Wyatt Gorges, Alexis (Jarrett) Surface, Erica Staton, Morgan and Riley Glavas and Landon Clemmons; great-great grandchildren; Aubrey Smith, Desiree Dennis, Benjamin and Isabella Leigh Gorges, Heston and Adalie Surface, and Alyssa, Hunter and Timothy Perkins; brother-in-law, Frank Reynolds; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, husband Charles and son Donald, Dorothy was predeceased by a sister, Ruth Blank; brother, Robert Kniffin; and great-great grandson, Gabriel Smith.
