Dorothy Pentz O’Neill, 101, daughter of Dr. Robert Hastings Pentz and Mrs. Grace Eaton (Hollick) Pentz, was born on September 29, 1915 on Staten Island, NY and passed away on March 19, 2017.

Dorothy started writing poetry at the age of seven. Her first published works as an adult were light verses, published in Good Housekeeping, Ladies Home Journal, The Saturday Evening Post and other magazines. During the 1960's she wrote a weekly humor column for The Staten Island Register, entitled “All Around the House”. At about the same time, Dorothy also wrote advertising copy for Montgomery Ward, in Manhattan.

Her first novel, a romance, was published in 1993 by Avalon Books (later Harlequin) and was followed by four more romances. In October 2001, Double Deception, the first in an eight mystery series was published by Avalon. The final book in the series, Caught Dead, came out in September of 2010, marking the debut of her 14th published novel, coincident with her 95th birthday!

Dorothy was an active member of the Rachael Caldwell Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Greensboro, NC for over twenty years.

She also was a member of the Writers’ Group of the Triad during her time in Greensboro. She loved spending time and collaborating personally (and via email), with her friends in the group. Together they published a very compelling volume of short mystery stories in the late 90’s.

Dorothy lived her first 50 years on Staten Island, moved to Albuquerque, NM in the early 70’s, to Johnstown, PA from 1988 to 1990 and then moved to Greensboro, NC where she resided until September 2010. Since 2011 she has resided in Mooresville, NC. Twice widowed, Dorothy had four sons, nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, two step children, and two step grandchildren, four step great-grandchildren.

Dorothy is survived by her sisters Audrey Hastings Pentz of Greensboro, NC and Carol (Pentz) Logan of Edina, MN.

Dorothy is also survived by her son William Harrison Barlow and his wife Mary (Marsh) Barlow, (Dorothy’s special angel); son Roger Eaton Barlow of Jackson, NJ; son Robert Pentz Barlow, MD and his wife Catherine (Crider) Barlow, MD of Portland OR; daughter-in-law Diane (Fea) Barlow of Spotswood, NJ; stepdaughter Patricia (O’Neill) Taylor, her husband Oliver (Toby) Taylor of Princeton, NJ and stepson John E. (Jack) O’Neill, Jr. of Burbank, CA.

Grandchildren include William Braden Barlow and his wife Christy (Setzer) Barlow of Charlotte, NC; Stephanie Marsh (Barlow) Semmes and her husband Richard Semmes of Charlotte, NC; Gillian (Barlow) Graham and her husband Jack), Elise DuVerney Barlow, Brian Barlow and Anna Barlow, all of Portland, OR; Kristen Lee Barlow, Lauren Marie Barlow and William Harrison Barlow, III, all of Spotswood, NJ; step-granddaughters Anne Taylor of Philadelphia, PA and Katherine Taylor and her husband Anthony (Tony) Balchun of Arlington, VA.

Dorothy is predeceased by her parents, Dr. Robert Hastings Pentz and Grace Eaton (Hollick) Pentz of Staten Island; her husband William Harrison Barlow, MD of Staten Island; her husband John E. O’Neill of Albuquerque, NM; her sister Grace (Pentz) Sloan of Madison CT; brother Arthur Hollick Pentz of Greensboro, NC; brother Albert Pentz of Staten Island and son Dwight Hastings Barlow of Spotswood, NJ.

Dorothy is a member of, and will be interred at Smyrna Church in Sherrills Ford, NC. We’re so happy that her extended family and friends have been continuing to celebrate her life with her, via numerous visits and reunions, since August, 2015.

A memorial to Dorothy and her life will be celebrated at Smyrna Church, at a time and date to be determined.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Catawba Regional Hospice organization.
We wish especially to thank Linda and Kathy from Hospice for their friendship and Dorothy’s kind, compassionate care.

It was always with humor that Dorothy liked to conclude a conversation. There’s this example, as she commented on her life as a young mother of 4 little boys in the ‘50s:

“My House Has Dirt of Boundless Scope.
…I Even Have to Wash the Soap!”
