Nancy L. (Dixon) Childress, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend passed away March 18, 2017; she was born in Guymon, Oklahoma, to Oral L. and Charlotte (Rainey) Dixon, March 30, 1950.
The descendant of well-respected Oklahoma Panhandle Pioneer families; grandparents Earl and Rosa Dixon, and great-grandparents Charles A. and Josie Westmoreland Hitch. Nancy had a loving childhood growing up on the Dixon family farm north of Guymon and spending much of her summertime enjoying her family on the Charles A. Hitch Ranch southeast of Guymon.
Nancy attended Straight School, graduated from the eighth grade at Straight, moved to Guymon as a freshman, and graduated from Guymon High School with the class of 1968.
After graduating from Guymon High School, Nancy continued her education at Oklahoma City University St. Anthony's School of Nursing in 1968 and 1969. She and Lonnie Childress had been dating for three years and Lonnie was completing his college ROTC and heading to Ft. Gordon, Georgia. Due to the unstable situation of young men going into the service during the Vietnam War, Nancy and Lonnie decided to be married in August before Lonnie reported to duty. They were married at the Charles Hitch ranch on August 15, 1969 and began their honeymoon on the road to Fort Gordon where Lonnie reported to duty as a Second Lieutenant eight days later. Nancy and Lonnie's four plus years of Army life allowed them to serve our country in many places; Fort Gordon, Georgia and Fort Sill, Oklahoma on native soil; and in Europe at Darmstadt, Heidelberg, Kaiserslautern, Bad Toelz, and Oberammergau, Germany. Nancy was the ultimate support to Lonnie as a Military Officer's wife; she was a vibrant part of the Officer's wives organizations and the couple made many military friendships that are still close today.
Upon completion of active duty, Nancy and Lonnie moved to Garden City, KS where Nancy completed her Registered Nursing certification at Garden City Community College, while Lonnie taught school, coached, and continued his military service in the Army National Guard in Southwest Kansas. Nancy began her nursing career by working in the Garden City Medical Center Doctor's offices.
After their first year in Garden City Lonnie began work in the center pivot sprinkler irrigation business, founded and started RainMart Irrigation, and established the office in Guymon. Nancy and Lonnie moved back to Guymon and Nancy continued her work as a registered nurse in the Texas County Memorial Hospital and the McMurry Clinic. Commencing in 1977, Nancy and Lonnie were blessed with three children in five years, Kristi, Kari, and Lance Childress. And, in 1977 Nancy began her new career as a dedicated Mom, mentor, encourager, and friend to her three children. In June of 1980 Nancy and Lonnie moved to the Charles Hitch ranch, where, over the next twenty years, they raised their family. Nancy's dedication to her children, husband, relatives, friends, and children's friends made the ranch a welcome destination to all who traveled there. She opened her home with open arms to many friends and business associates that Lonnie would bring to the ranch, sometimes surprisingly, without much notice. Nancy entered another career in 1996 when she began helping Lonnie do some invoicing for Quality Integrated Services, Inc. Over the next 20 years she became a vital officer of the corporation, representing the company as President from 2004 to the latter part of 2014. She was the consummate foundation of the office, admired and cherished by those who worked with her in the office and respected by leaders of many large and small oil and gas Corporations throughout the U.S. and Canada. Nancy was a member of the FQ Chapter of PEO, Secretary of the Board of the Texas County Memorial Foundation; and attended Victory Memorial United Methodist Church of Guymon.
Nancy was preceded in death by her parents Oral and Charlotte Dixon.
Survivors include her loving husband Lonnie Childress of Guymon; two daughters; Kristi Cooper, and husband, Zac Cooper of Norman, Oklahoma; Kari Young, and husband, Jason Young of Frisco, Texas; one son, Lance Childress and wife Ashley, and their children, Jaxon Childress and Lennon Childress of Edmond, Oklahoma. Her aunts, uncles, and cousins were so cherished and loved by Nancy; as well as, her extended family and many close friends.
