Poet. Identified by his pen name of Hugh MacDiarmid, he is recognized as one of the primary voices in the rebirth of Scottish literature during the twentieth century. Much of his poetry employs the Scots dialect. An ardent supporter of Scottish independence, he was a founding member of the National Party of Scotland in 1928. His best remembered work is the long poem "A Drunk Man Looks at the Thistle."
