Obituary

Lucille (Bates) Austin, 86, of Keene, NH passed away peacefully on January 10, 2015 at Maplewood Nursing Home after a period of declining health.

Lucille was born in Worcester, MA on October 29, 1928, the daughter of Warren and Irene (Scott) Bates. Mrs. Austin grew up with her extended family on their farm in Dudley, MA. As a very young child she met a neighbor who became the "love of her life" and future husband, Richard. She attended and graduated from Bartlett High School, Webster, MA in 1946 and the Boston School of Dental Nursing in 1947.

After spending several years in Buffalo, NY and Pittsburgh, PA, Mrs. Austin and her husband moved to Keene in 1963 where they raised their family. Mrs. Austin worked for nearly 25 years at Keene YMCA and loved her interactions with the many Keene residents she met there before retiring in 1993. After her retirement, she volunteered at the American Red Cross and Cedarcrest, both located in Keene. She and Richard especially enjoyed watching their three sons play sports throughout high school and beyond. They were also frequent spectators at their grandchildren's' sporting and other school events. She cherished family gatherings, particularly during the holidays and summer barbeques. They enjoyed their retirement years spending the winter months in St. Augustine, FL as well as traveling the New Hampshire and Maine coast line.

Mrs. Austin was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Richard. Survivors include her three sons, Gary and his wife Corinne of Hooksett, NH; Brian and his wife Beverly of Grantham, NH; David and his wife Molly of Surry, NH; as well as her brother Howard, and his wife Sylvia of Dudley, MA; and her sister Claire (Polkraka) and her husband Ron of Falmouth, MA. She is also survived by eight beloved grandchildren, Gary's Jenn and Greg, Brian's Sarah and Kristina, and David's Kyle, Courtney, Sophie and Abby.

Services: Calling hours will be held on Thursday; January 22, 2015 from 4 to 6 pm at Fletcher Funeral Home & Cremation Services, 33 Marlboro St., Keene, NH. A funeral service will be held at the United Church of Christ, 23 Central Square, Keene, NH on Friday; January 23, 2015 at 11 am.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers contributions be made to: Cedarcrest, 91 Maple Ave., Keene, NH; American Red Cross, 83 Court St., Keene, NH.; or Maplewood Nursing Home, 201 River Rd., Westmoreland, NH.
Date interred: Jan. 23, 2015.
