Dr.Charles L. Pelton, 76, of Gettysburg, SD, and formerly of Aberdeen, SD, died Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at Bethany Home in Sioux Falls, SD. Memorial services will be 10:30 am, April 15, 2017 at Spitzer-Miller Funeral Home, Aberdeen, SD.

Charles Pelton was born November 22, 1940 to Charles Leonard and Irene (Briggs) Pelton in Mitchell, SD. When he was six years old they moved near Timber Lake, SD, where he attended Chapel Country School on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation followed by graduating from Timber Lake High School.


Charles married Lois Myers on June 21, 1959 in Timber Lake, SD.

He attended Sioux Falls College, Sioux Falls, SD, on a football scholarship. After that he received a Bachelor of Science degree in Medicine from the University of South Dakota at Vermillion. He then earned his medical degree from the Kansas University Medical Center, Kansas City, KS, and began his internship at Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, SD in 1970. He was then offered a position in Sioux Falls, but he chose to serve patients at Hoven, SD, where he could work in a rural setting. From there he moved to Gettysburg, SD, and then, in 1977, to Aberdeen, SD, where he remained until his retirement from private practice in 1987. Following that he did locum tenens medical work including in emergency departments, for Indian Health Services, and with the VA until 2014.

During his career Dr. Pelton also completed a postgraduate course in Law with La Salle University of Manderville, LA earning a Juris Doctorate - Cum Laude. In addition, he completed a Bush Fellowship Grant in the study of the Non-Psychotic elements [Psycho-Social] in family health care.

Charles took flying lessons from Harry Herbertson in Tea, SD, eventually becoming intrument-rated. The family enjoyed traveling around the world.

Charles was a highly creative man, whether he was writing one of his several published books, designing a landscape for the yard, or choosing pictures that reinforced his beliefs. He enjoyed his time on his Kubota Tractor. He passed his passions on to his children. He also considered it a privilege to encourage his children and grandchildren and watch them become happy, healthy, productive members of society.

Grateful for having shared Charles’s life are his wife; his children: Cynthia Leigh Pelton of Sioux City, IA; Charles Pelton, Jr. of Aberdeen, SD; Christine Louise Pelton of Sioux Falls, SD; grandchildren: Alex, Kaytlin, Megan, Heath, and Erik Pelton; three great-grandchildren; and his siblings: Doug Pelton of Piedmont, SD, and Nellie Herrick of Florida.

Preceding Charles in death were his father; mother, Irene Anderson; step-father, Paul Anderson; brothers Michael Pelton and Earl Jackman.
