PFC Lee Vern Silver, Vietnam Veteran, Native of Whitakers, North Carolina.

Private First Class Lee Vern Silver was a casualty of the Vietnam War. As a member of the Army, PFC Silver served our country until February 17th, 1969 in Log An, South Vietnam. He was 19 years old and was not married. It was reported that Lee died from drowning. His body was recovered. Lee was born on February 2nd, 1950 in Whitakers, North Carolina. PFC Silver is on panel 32W, line 051 of the Vietnam Memorial Wall in Washington D.C. He served our country for less than a year.

Lee and I both arrived at the 1097th Boat Company, Mobile Riverine Force,(9th ID) together along with two other guys. Lee was the first to be put on a boat and the only one of us four to die, although later another was critically wounded. Bill Stuart, Cape Carteret, NC 28584.

Although I served with the 9th Infantry Division with the 2nd/39th Infantry in Vietnam part of the time that PFC Silver was there, I am not sure if I personally knew him, but if not I sure wish I did. He is a real and true American Hero. May God continue to bless his family and friends. May his remembrance live on forever. Danny R. McCready.

Lee was the son of Mr Herman Silver and Mrs Elizabeth Lynch Silver Lewis of North Whitakers, NC. Lee loved to play basketball but church came 1st. He joined the church at an early age, he loved the Lord and all people. Lee didn't finish school because his grandfather had a stroke and he took care of him. He told me he prayed every night while in country. He had told me of a blast where incurred a head injury that resulted in 15 stitches but he still continued on,serving God and his country-Elizabeth Lewis his mother.

He served with the 1097th Transportation Company(Boat) "River Raiders", 159th Transportation Battalion, 4th Transportation Command, USA Support Command Saigon, 1st Logistics Command, USARV.

He was awarded The Bronze Star Medal, The Vietnam Service Medal, The Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, The National Defense Service Medal.
