He was a US Air Force Veteran. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he graduated with a degree in Botany. He was a graduate of Clemson with a Doctorate in Plant Physiology where he discovered a new species of plant that he named for a former professor Fred James. (Smilax jamesii). He taught at numerous colleges in upstate South Carolina. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.
Interment in Pineview Cemetery, Mount Holly.
