Craig M. Stevens, age 70, of Reid St. Fort Plain, NY lost his over 2-year courageous battle with cancer on February 24, 2017. He was born May 27, 1946, the son of Donald and Marion Stevens of Canajoharie, NY. He graduated from Canajoharie Central School Class of 1964. He was employed by General Electric in Schenectady, NY for a few years. He attended Officer Candidate School of the US Army and graduated with the standing of 1st lieutenant with plans to make a career of the Army. Then on October 5, 1968 he married Linda Casler, daughter of Gerald and Ada Casler of Fort Plain,NY and joined the US Army Reserves instead. He was then employed by Royalty Gold Star Homes, Inc., in Randall, NY where he became a Junior Partner and held the title of Vice President. Linda and he made their home there until 1974 when they moved to Brookman’s Corners with their two small sons. Craig became a stay-at-home Dad and cared for the boys and Linda went back to work. Together they renovated the old farmhouse where they lived. Eventually Craig started working at Otsquago View Farm owned by his in laws, and after a few years took over complete operation along with his wife. They farmed it for 37 years, gradually purchasing it. In 2012 they sold the farm, retired and started spending winters in Zephyrhills, Florida. Craig was very active and a member of Freysbush Methodist Church in Freysbush, NY. He was on the board of directors of the Montgomery County Agricultural Society, Inc. (Fonda Fair) for 9 years and served as President for 3 years. He was a district director for 3 years with the New York State Fair Assoc. He was a Mason, a Farm Bureau member, a 4-H project leader for several years and a member of AgriMark, Inc. He always put his family first and was a loving husband, father, father-in-law and grandfather. He was an avid reader of books and magazines about God and religion, Civil War and World War II, and he never missed a televised NASCAR race. He leaves behind his wife, Linda, 2 sons and daughter-in-law’s; Jeffrey (Linda) Stevens of Weltsville, NY, Christopher (Jami) Stevens of Fort Plain, NY and 5 grandchildren; Mackenzie and Grant Stevens of Fort Plain, NY and Noah, Rebecca and Sarah Stevens of Wellsville, NY, 2 brothers and wives; Gregory (Cheryle) Stevens of Clifton Park, NY, Scott (Cindy) Stevens of Canajoharie, NY and 2 sisters and one brother-in-law Michelle (Thomas) Ashworth of Milford, PA and Linette Stevens of Albany, NY. Several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was a man who lived his life for God and lived by the motto” A wise man changes his mind many times but a fool never does.” There will be a “Celebration of His life” on May 27, 2017 at 11 a.m. at the Freysbush United Methodist Church at 620 Freysbush Rd. Fort Plain, NY 13339. There will be a time in the service for those in attendance to share how Craig touched their lives. Following the service a lunch will be served and all who attend are welcome to stay for some fellowship.
