TUSCALOOSA - Kirby Gordon Lawless, Jr., of Tuscaloosa, AL, passed away at home on March 16, 2017. A visitation will be held on Sunday, March 19, 2017 from 1-2 p.m. at Heritage Chapel Funeral Home, 5200 Old Birmingham Highway, Tuscaloosa, AL 35404 with services to follow at 2:00 p.m. with Dr. Ken Dunivant officiating. A private family committal service will take place at Evergreen City Cemetery with Heritage Chapel Funeral Home, A Dignity Memorial provider directing.
Kirby Gordon Lawless, Jr. (known as Gordon to his friends in Tuscaloosa and Papa to grandchildren) was born in Birmingham,
Alabama on August 12, 1924.
He is preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Dora Mae Busbee Lawless (known as Buzz), and his mother, Ethel Mae Black Lawless, and father Kirby Gordon Lawless, Sr.
He is survived by three children, Kirby G. Lawless III of Huntsville Alabama, Madelene L. Hollingsworth (Arden) and Marc Lawless, both of Tuscaloosa. He is survived by five grandchildren, Christopher Gordon Lawless of Huntsville, AL, Elizabeth Marie Hollingsworth of Nashville, TN, Joseph Arden Hollingsworth of Tuscaloosa, Gordon Anderson Lawless and Charles Portland Lawless of Faunsdale, AL. He also is survived by his sister,
Eleanor Lawless Holt (Kelly), of Cleveland, Ohio, sisters-in-laws, Cile Ellis (Elliott) of Vienna, GA and Johnnie Dell Thompson of Jacksonville, FL.
Gordon graduated from Woodlawn High School in Birmingham, AL in
1941. He registered for the United States Navy at the age of 17 years. He attended Auburn University for one quarter and then was called into duty and became a Naval Aviator.
He graduated from Auburn University in 1948 and then Emory Law School in 1951. He married in 1951 as well and moved to Washington DC where he worked in the General Counsel Offices of the then Civil Aeronautic Administration.
He moved with his young family back to Alabama in 1953 where he worked for Mason Corporation in Birmingham, AL. In 1956, he joined Phifer Wire Products in Tuscaloosa. He retired from Phifer Wire Products in 1985 as Senior Vice President of International Sales. He continued consulting in export management after his retirement. He and Buzz then lived predominantly in Destin, Florida until her death when he moved back to Tuscaloosa.
He was proud of his work with Phifer Wire Products, especially of its growth and expansion, nationally and internationally. He was a member of the President's Export Council, the Alabama State Export Council, and the Business Council of Alabama. He contributed to Phifer Wire Products being awarded the "E" Award in Excellence in exports at the White House in May of 1984.
He traveled 76 countries as part of international sales for Phifer Wire Products.
During his time in Tuscaloosa, he was a member of the Tuscaloosa Chamber of Commerce, the Tuscaloosa Industrial Development Board, the Tuscaloosa Zoning Board of Adjustment, a member of the Kiwanis Club, and a member of the First United Methodist Church and a proud member of the Lee Class of FUMC.
He loved the water, boating and traveling. His main hobby, however, was Alabama Republican politics. Anyone who knew him in Tuscaloosa knew him as Mr. Republican. He was a member of the local, state, and national Republican Party from 1956 to 1985.
Gordon loved his wife and family and always took care of them. He loved his dear friends, especially Frank Mason, Ward Hayslip, and Johnny Duckworth. He loved animals, particularly his favorite companion, Max, in the last part of his life.
The family wants to thank Dad's angels and assistants, Cedric Stewart, Joe Bell, Valerie Stallworth, and Jereesha Johnson. Many thanks to Dr. Regina Harrell for her care and kindness.
In lieu of flowers, the family desires contributions to be made to the First United Methodist Church, 800 Greensboro Avenue, Tuscaloosa, AL 35401 or the Alzheimer's Association at alz.org.
Gordon Lawless was an accomplished aviator, internationally known businessman, and family provider that has now been brought in for a very smooth final landing.
