Yoshie Skrabutenas
July 16, 1921 - November 21, 2015
Resident of Sunnyvale

Yoshie died peacefully from cancer at the age of 94.

Born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1921, Yoshie was daughter to Mitsugu Yoshimatsu and Hatsu Nomiya. As a girl she helped care for her younger brother and worked in the family's laundry shop. When a young woman she married and had her first son Yasuo Shinozuka. Her husband died 1945 in China.

In 1955 Yoshie married Floyd Skrabutenas, a tall, quiet American of Lithuanian heritage. She was impressed by his shy gentleness and he was enamored with her liveliness and easy laughter. Floyd, a Pan Am mechanic who worked around the globe, finally was based at SFO. The newlyweds settled in a Sunnyvale house chosen by Yoshie to enjoy the sunset. She worked at home as a seamstress and raised three children: Gary, Grace, and Gene. Family vacations ranged from car camping to flights overseas. In later years Floyd and Yoshie travelled extensively, highlighted by a world tour.

After Floyd died in 1992, Yoshie continued to visit Japan every year until her last trip at the age of 92. She also enjoyed visiting casinos, a lucky frog talisman near at hand.

Proud of her American home and family, Yoshie was also very Japanese. She loved Japanese aesthetics, culture, entertainment, and food. A wonderful cook, she was known as Mame Nee-chan (Bean Sister) for the sweet beans she'd prepare for gatherings, and for decades she hosted the family's Japanese New Year's feast.

Yoshie was warm-hearted, modest, and gentle. Always grateful and gracious to others, she will truly be missed and loved. Yoshie is survived by her four children and eight grandchildren.

She was inurned with Floyd at Alta Mesa Memorial Park in Palo Alto during a private family ceremony. Donations can be made in her name to the El Camino Hospital Foundation Cancer Center or the charity of your choice .
