Artist. Born in Peoria, Illinois, Charles Louis Turner moved with his family to California at a young age. He was educated in Pasadena schools, then enrolled at California State University's College of Letters at Berkeley, where he lived in the Phi Gamma Delta house. He studied art with Edith White and Arthur Mathews, then studied abroad in Italy, France, and Germany. He became an art teacher in San Francisco's public schools. He gained world attention when his works, primarily oil on canvas, were widely displayed in galleries and museums in San Francisco, Monterey, Pasadena, Seattle, England, Italy, and France - even at the Louvre. He returned to Pasadena in 1912, where he continued to teach and exhibit his work. He became ill in 1917, and died there two years later at the age of fifty-two.
