Edward "Spur" Burns Slone/Sloan was the son of Dr. David Franklin Slone (Veterinarian Surgeon) and Martha Ellen Long. His father David was born 1 Feb 1823 in Pittsboro, Chatham, North Carolina, and immigrated with his parents to Carrollton in the fall of 1833. His mother Martha was born 5 Mar 1832 in Henry County, Kentucky.
Edward was the last child born of seven. His siblings are, in order of age: Wesley Clinton, 1855-1894; Eliza Victoria, 1857-1884; George Franklin "Frank", 1860-1914; Laura Beulah, 1862-1950; Charles Henry, 1865-1939; Ida Mae, 1868-1959; and last was Edward.
Edward married Della McGarvin on 14 Feb 1898 in Roodhouse, Illinois. Della was born 6 Sep 1877 in Danville, Montgomery, Missouri. She was the daughter of William McGarvin and Eva Ann Gentry.
To this union were born six children. They are, in order of age: CPL Dana "Chad" Chalmers, 1899-1973; Ehret Oberia, 1903-1974; Jack Gentry, 1905-1988; Beulah Blossom, 1908-1985; Verna Virginia, 1911-1995; and SGT William "Billy" Thomas, 1916-1987.

Edward B. Sloan of Wood River, but formerly of Carrollton, died at 12:20 p.m. Tuesday in St. Josephs Hospital in Alton, where he had been a patient for two weeks. He was 72 years of age having been born in Carrollton on August 7, 1871.
Decedent was a son of Mr. and Mrs. David Sloan, both deceased. He leaves Mrs. Della Sloan, his wife, and six children, Dana of Godfrey, Jack of Wood River, Blossom of Wood River, William in the armed forces and stationed in England, Mrs. C.L. Pichard of Chicago, and Mrs. Robert Tolley of Lansing, Illinois. Two sisters survive him; Mrs. Ida Haworth of Springfield, and Mrs. L.M. Harwood of St. Louis. A brother, Charles, former well known grain buyer of Carrollton, died November 21, 1939.
The funeral will be held this afternoon (Friday) at 2 p.m. at the Mehl Funeral Home in Carrollton. Burial will be in Providence cemetery.
Ed "Spur" Sloan lived for many years in Carrollton and was employed, at various times, in the poultry business, also in the restaurant business. He will be best remembered by many of the older baseball fans as he was a promising pitcher at one time in his career and appeared on many baseball fields in central Illinois, also in Missouri. In many of these contests he was opposed by pitchers who afterward played in the better leagues, but he seldom failed to turn in a winning performance. An arm injury ended his career in baseball.
