A son of Hugh and Bess (Bode) Sims, David Sims was born on Christmas Day in Burlington Iowa. His family were longtime residents of Quincy Illinois.

He graduated Quincy High School and Quincy College, then worked at Moorman's in Quincy in its chemistry department, until he retired.

His memberships included: American Chemists' Society; Quality Control Association of America; Cedar Crest Country Club; Lambert Lodge no. 659, where he was a Life Member Mason and a past Lodge Master; and the San Juan Capistrano Seniors' Club.

David Sims served in the Navy from 1943 to 1945, as a member of its 591 Construction Battalion. He was in the Marshall islands at Majuro Atoll, on 4 June 1944.

He resided in San Juan Capistrano, California, in later life, and died in 2005 at the Mission Hospital in nearby Mission Viejo.

His funeral was held in Laguna Hills, California but he is buried at Greenmount cemetery in Quincy, Illinois.
