William Monroe "Bill" Harlan, 90, long-time resident of Roberts Bend Road, died Thursday, March 16, 2017 at Harbor View Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Memphis, Tennessee.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Steven Holt and Ken Harlan officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church Cemetery with military honors provided by the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends Tuesday 4:00 – 7:00 P.M. and Wednesday from 12:00 P.M. until service time at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorials to Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church, c/o Melissa Greer, 1920 Ivy Court, Columbia, TN 38401. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com.

Bill was born in Monroe, Louisiana on July 24, 1926 to the late James "Jim Harlan and the late Ducie Mayfield Harlan. He and his parents later moved to Columbia, Tennessee; where he received his education at Concord School and Columbia Central High School. He served in the United States Army during the Korean War, where he was stationed in Germany and the Korean Theater. He worked at Production Credit Association and was a life-long farmer.
Mr. Harlan was a long-time member of Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church. On December 3, 1950 at Mt. Nebo he married Mary Lee Bell who preceded him in death May 11, 2003.

Survivors include his son, William Kenneth Harlan of Memphis; daughters, Pam (Don) Thurman and Pattie (Gary) Holt both of Columbia; sister, Eloise (Larry) Cheatham of Columbia; brother, Pete (Sue) Harlan of Columbia; grandchildren, Kimberly (Andy) Coates, Kyle Thurman, Brian Holt, Steven (Kaycee) Holt, Hunter (Britney Stephenson) Harlan, and Haley Harlan; great grandchildren, Addison Coates, Andrew Coates, Alexia Holt, Ainsley Holt, and Jackson Holt; sisters-in-law, Barbara (Frank) Thomas of Columbia; Jane Jones of Mt. Pleasant; Helen Bell of Columbia; brother-in-law, Jimmy Grimmett; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sister, Irma Ruth Harlan; in-laws, Lewis and Nora Bell; Billy Stutts; Virginia and Glenn Tallent; James Thomas and Lena Bell; Billie and Arnell Kincaid; L.C. Bell; Lounora Grimmett; and Joe and Linda Bell.

Active pallbearers will be Kyle Thurman, Brian Holt, Steven Holt, Hunter Harlan, Gregg Dabney, Harlan Dabney, James Harlan, Buddy Harlan, and Garrick Jones. Honorary pallbearers include Jonas Eldred, Mike Clark, Frankie Rowe, Frank Allen and Barbara Thomas, Jane Jones, Jimmy Grimmett, Helen Bell, all of his Bell and Harlan nieces and nephews, and past and present members of Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church.
