Marvin was born on April 8, 1929, on the Scherman farm in Alpha, North Dakota. He was the fourth of seven children born to Edward and Mary “Mamie” (Otremba) Scherman. Marvin grew up on the family farmstead near Alpha and helped milk cows and raise chickens as well as the numerous other chores on the farm. He earned the nickname “Chores” as whenever the kids asked him to stay after school to play ball, he always told them that he had to go home to “do chores”. Marvin grew up knowing the importance of family, the value of hard work, honesty, and possessing a strong and unwavering faith. He carried these values with him his entire life, and his faith in our Lord brought him through many trials and heartbreaks.
Marvin attended his first eight years of school in Alpha and then boarded at the Clark Apartments in Beach, North Dakota to complete his last four years, graduating from Beach High School.
Marvin married the love of his life, Janice Craigo, on September 4, 1962. To this union four children were born; Jon, Mark, Lisa, and Kristi. Marvin worked hard to take his family on many camping trips, where some of the best memories were made.
Marvin loved farming and never wanted to do anything else. His started on his own in 1962, when he purchased the Andrew Kohler farmstead with a section of land. His farm and ranch expanded as he remained there for the next 52 years. Over those years he milked cows, raised pigs, ran cattle, farmed numerous crops, and even moved many buildings with the help of his brothers. His favorite pastime was driving through the pasture to check cows. Marvin was a man of many talents. He could fix anything, repair his own equipment, and always managed to make something out of nothing – he always said, “Where there’s a will, there’s a way.”
Marvin was a longtime member of the Golva Co-op Elevator Board, Knights of Columbus and St. Mary’s Parish of Golva.
Marvin is preceded in death by his wife, Janice; his son, Jon; his parents, Edward and Mary; his sister, Alice (Floyd) Weyer; and brothers, Edward and Maynard.
