Silas Cherry, Area Pioneer Is Dead At 87

Silas Jacob Cherry, 87, a pioneer resident of Stephens and Jefferson County ares, died at 8 a.m. Sunday in a Duncan nursing home.

Cherry was born October 31, 1871 near Sherman, Texas. He married Evelyn DeLay, November 16, 1894, at Comanche and they homesteaded at Hastings in 1899.

The Cherry's continued to live in the Comanche and Hastings area until her death in 1931, when he moved to Anadarko. He returned to Comanche in 1946 and lived in a nursing home here about four years.

He was a member of the Calvary Baptist of Duncan. He had belonged to the Baptist church since he was 18.

Service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Comanche, with the Rev. William Travis, pastor, officiating.

There also will be a graveside service at Comanche Cemetery. Phillips-Elsey Funeral Home of Comanche is in charge.

Survivors include a son, W. C. of Comanche; a daughter, Mrs. Bertha Reiter, of Duncan; a brother, Robert E. of Anadarko; 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
Bearers will be Joe Kinder, Walter Jones, S. J. McPhail, Russ Davison, Bill Guest and Ed Williams.
