Walter Ray "Corky" Hart, 67, of Hickory passed away on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at the VA Hospital in Asheville after a lengthy illness of COPD.
He was born September 21, 1949 in Morganton to the late Wiley James Hart and Verlie Williams Hart, formally of Cape Hickory Road. In addition to his parents, Corky was preceded in death by his brother, Jimmy Douglas Hart.
Corky graduated from Hildebran High School in 1968 and then joined the Navy Seabees. After the Navy, he worked in heavy equipment and paving industry until he retired. Corky worked for many companies such as Mid-State Paving of Hickory and McWhirter Grading of Mint Hill, NC. He was an avid NASCAR racing fan and his hero was Dale Earnhardt Sr. Corky was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church and the American Legion.
He was survived by his wife, Bettina Martin Hart of the home; his children, Christina Leigh Martin Hart of Hickory and Corey "Shane" Hart of Alabama; his step children, Stephanie Triplett Hunt (Randy) of Alabama, Jonathan Hart Ward of Hickory, Roy Jonathan Cook (Ashley) of Hudson, and Ryan Joshua Cook (Jill) of Denver, NC; his sisters, Janis Hart Huffman (Ralph) of Hickory and Libbie Hart Johnson (Herb) of Charlotte; mother-in-law, Betty Cook Martin of Hildebran; sister-in-law, Beverly Martin Nichols of Hickory; brother-in-law, Brian N. Martin of Hildebran; eleven grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 2pm on Sunday March 19, 2017 at Bethany Lutheran Church, 1644 Main Ave Dr NW, Hickory, NC 28601 with the Rev. Dr. C. Pierson Shaw, Jr. and Elijah Cole Nichols (nephew) officiating. Burial will follow at the Hart Family Cemetery with military rites.
