BIOGRAPHY:
Arthur William MacCulloch was born September 18, 1917 in Benton County, Washington to George Nixon MacCulloch and Minnie Nellie Spekker. Arthur was the youngest of his brothers and sisters, which included Mary Margaret, George Robert, and Opal Jane. George Robert MacCulloch later became a Doctor in Yakima, WA (Dcd. 6-12-2002).

Arthur W McCulloch, age 22, is residing in Annapolis, Anne Arundel, Maryland, where his occupation is midshipman at the US Naval Academy Bancroft Hall; according to the 1940 census.

'Arthur William McCulloch was appointed to the US Naval Academy from Washington state, home of record, Pasco. He graduated in 1941 and was commissioned an ensign. He was quickly promoted to Lieutenant (j.g.). Sadly, before 1942 ended, he had become one of those who was lost, and whose final resting place is known only to God.' (Contributed by FAG contributor Noelani #47540159)

FAG Contributor Noelani found his name on a monument at the US Naval Academy cemetery, under the heading "Here we remember our shipmates, whose resting places are known only to God...".

Arthur received the PURPLE HEART medal posthumously. The USN did not authorize the posthumous award of the Purple Heart medal to anyone until 1943, which means they are retroactive.

Arthur was preceded in death by his father, George N McCulloch. Surviving is his mother, Minnie N McCulloch of Seattle, WA; sisters Mary M and Opal J; and a brother George R.

[Note: Arthur may have been on the USS Wasp, which was sunk near Guadalcanal on 15 Sept 1942. The date would be correct, and there were no other American ships sunk, that day, or the next - one year and one day earlier ('Missing in Action) than the 1943 date ('Killed in Action) listed on the naval books.]
