Services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Thursday, March 2, 2017, at the Victory Family Church located at 400 W. Hwy. 380 in Decatur with his son, Allen Bates, Pastor of Victory Family Church, officiating. Interment will follow in the Archer City Cemetery under the direction of Aulds Funeral Home.
The family will receive friends from 5:30 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at Coker-Hawkins Funeral Home located at 405 East Main Street in Decatur.
George was born November 26, 1921 in Lubbock, Texas to the late Owen Mackafee Bates and Nanny Moore Bates. He attended school in Holliday.
George married the love of his life, Cleota Smith on February 7, 1942 in Walters, Oklahoma. She preceded him in death on November 20, 2009.
George worked for Gifford-Hill American Pipe Company for forty-five years as a field superintendent and traveled all over Texas until his retirement in1990.
In 1989, George moved to Decatur. He was a charter member of Victory Family Church in Decatur.
Survivors include two daughters, Diane Sartain and husband, Jim of Eagle Mountain Lake and Evelyn Ryan of Decatur; one son, Allen Bates and wife, Velda of Decatur; son-in-law, Jack Purdy of Sherman; daughter-in-law, Mary Ann Bates of Clay County; thirteen grandchildren numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by one daughter, Gloria Purdy on April 28, 2011 and one son, George L. Bates on February 16, 2017.
