On the 23rd day of July, 1862, enlisted as a private in Company C, 108th New York Volunteers (Captain William H. Andrews' company); left with the regiment for the seat of war 8/19/1862, and after the battle of Antietam, 9/17/1862, was promoted to Corporal; was with the regiment till the Battle of Fredericksburg where he was wounded, 12/13/1862, by a minnie ball in the left leg; was sent to the hospital, and from there to Utica, NY, where he received his discharge 5/8/1863. Remained at his former home awhile and went to Grass Lake, Mich. On the 8th day of February, 1865, he enlisted for the second time as Corporal of Company, C, 11th Michigan Volunteer Infantry, and was discharged 9/16/1865.
