He was born December 25, 1948, in Michigan City, IN, to Richard Raymond and Geraldine Ella Pauline (Tews) Norman.
Joe honorably served his country in the United States Navy during Vietnam War. Joe was an avid collector of old tractors and guns. He enjoyed attending cook outs and family dinners. Joe’s heart was bigger than he was. He never met a stranger, everyone was a friend. He was the best father and grandfather any family could have. Joe was the backbone of his family, naming him the “Chief.”
On August 18, 1968, in Michigan City, IN, he married Joyce Ann (Long) Norman, who preceded him in death on April 4, 2004.
Also preceding him in death were his parents; one son, Duane Kenneth Norman II; two brothers, Richard and James Norman; and one infant brother, Ralph Norman.
Surviving are one daughter, Melissa (David) Westlund of Michigan City; one brother, Carl (Dr. Rev. Phyllis) Norman of Watertown, Connecticut; four grandchildren, Ashley (Jon) Norman Waldo, David Joseph Westlund, Kaitlin Westlund, and Brittany (Anthony) Bishop; three great grandchildren, Olivia, Jaxson, and Maddox; several nieces; one nephew; five close friends, BJ Coleman of La Porte, Craig Hager, Jim Mayfield, Jeff and Rick Ludington, and Bill Edwards all of Michigan City.
A funeral celebrating his life will be held at 4 p.m., Friday, March 17, 2017 at Lakeview Funeral Home & Crematory, 247 W. Johnson Rd., La Porte, (219) 362-3100 with Dr. Rev. Phyllis Norman officiating. Visitation and viewing will be held from 2 p.m. until time of service Friday at the funeral home. Military Honors will be conducted. Burial will take place at a later date at Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City.
