He enlisted in the Army on October 1, 1942 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was noted, at the time of his enlistment, as being employed as a Stock clerk and also as Single, without dependents.

B-17F #42-5836, while on a bombing mission over Yugoslavia, was hit by bombs from a B-17 above them and their right wing was badly damaged causing them to crash near Skopje, Yugoslavia (Currently in Macedonia) during the war.

John was "Killed In Action" in this crash.

He was awarded the Air Medal and the Purple Heart.
