Melvin Walstein Phillips, 79, of Screven, died Tuesday, March 14, 2017, at his residence and under the care of Hospice of South Georgia. The Pierce County native lived in Wayne County most of his life and was a member of Liberty Lighthouse Church and a U. S. Air Force Veteran. The ITT Rayonier retiree enjoyed fishing, playing his guitar, traveling in the mountains, and yardwork. He was predeceased by his wife, Gertrude Fowler Phillips; daughters, Marie Pap and Melissa Todd; sister, Rita Brock.

Survivors are his daughter, Patty Diller of Jesup; sons and daughter-in-law, Jackey Peebles and Mike (Gail) Phillips of Jesup, Jimmy Peebles of Screven, and Mell (Beth) Phillips of Norfolk, Virginia; brothers and sisters-in-law, Morris (Vicky) Phillips of Jesup and Carroll (Linda) Phillips of Tybee Island; several grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 16, 2017, at Rinehart and Sons Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Stanley Todd officiating. Interment will be in Screven City Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be his grandsons.

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 2:00 prior to service at the funeral home.
