Frank “Buddy” Howell, 91, from Myerstown, WV passed away March 13, 2017 at the Martinsburg VA Medical Center.
Frank was born March 25, 1926 to Stormer and Virginia R. Howell in Summit Point, West Virginia. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Shirley Edwards Howell, four children, Vicky Henry (Gary), Jeannie Tanaka (Arthur), Frank, Jr. (Christie), Terri Anderson (Robert); six grandchildren, J. R. Henry, Emily Anderson, Trevor and Wesley Tanaka, and Gracie and Stormer Howell; one step-grandson, Tony Henry; one great-granddaughter, Madison Henry, and several nieces and nephews.
Frank entered the U.S. Army at Fort Knox, Kentucky in 1950. After various assignments at Fort Meade, Maryland and Fort Gordon, Georgia, Frank was assigned to Joint Task Force 132 and deployed to Eniwetok Atoll in the Marshall Islands in the South Pacific in support of the Atomic Energy Commission’s nuclear weapons development and testing mission. Frank was honorably discharged in 1952.
After his discharge, Frank returned to his previous job as an auto mechanic with Goode Brothers in Charles Town for several years before moving on to the federal civil service. He served in various positions ultimately retiring in 1987 as a Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning maintenance technician for the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Frank’s greatest passions were fishing, hunting, and camping with his son, Frank Jr., and grandson, J.R. He enjoyed his cats, gardening and sitting on his deck watching the birds, especially the Purple Martins.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents, Stormer and Virginia Howell, and two sisters, Virginia Willingham and Alma Foley.
Friends will be received from 10:00AM to 11:00AM on Monday at Brown Funeral Home prior to the graveside service at 11:30AM on Monday, March 20, 2017 at Pleasant View Memory Gardens, Baker Heights, followed by a Celebration of Life service at Grace Reformed United Church of Christ, Kearneysville with Reverend Charles Henry officiating.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the VA Medical Center, Hospice and Palliative Care Unit. Mail to: VA Medical Center, Voluntary Service, 510 Butler Avenue, Martinsburg, WV 25405.
