Obituary for Mrs. Louise Hickman.....
Dorothy 'Louise' Hickman (nee Powell), 93, passed away on March 14, 2017. She was born on April 9, 1923 in Hart County to Carl Benjamin Powell, Sr., and Janie Murray Powell of Hartwell, GA.
Louise lived in Atlanta, GA for many years, followed by Macon, GA and returned to Hartwell, GA in 1977 to enjoy life on Lake Hartwell.
While teaching school in south Georgia, Louise met and married Martin Jones Calloway in 1943. They had four sons, Martin, Jr., Benjamin, Stephen and William. Captain Martin Calloway was tragically killed on an Eastern Airline plane crash in 1960. Louise met her second husband, Benjamin Whitfield Hickman, through her church in Atlanta and they married in 1967. Ben's daughter, Judy, joined Louise's sons in the family. Louise and Ben enjoyed many happy years together until his death in 1990.
Louise was a woman who loved family deeply, loved her church, cared for others and had many interests. She enjoyed God's creation and its people through her many travels, while also partaking of experiences others did not.
Her extended family was always in her mind. She moved back to Hartwell to help care for her mother, Janie Powell, and her brother James Powell.
She treasured antique paintings and house items from her ancestors. Her sons and their families were the highlight of her summers and Christmases. There was a celebration at each family's arrival, eliciting her beautiful smile and joy radiating from her with each hug. Summer visits included lake and other outdoor activities enjoyed by everyone. Evenings of friendly competitive games around the table, much food, and many armchair discussions helped bond her clan who lived in multiple states. Louise loved Christmas, both the true meaning and family celebrations. She enjoyed having her family at her house. She decorated her house to elicit their smiles. Photos of her sons with their spouses, children, and grandchildren are all over her house and brought her much joy.
Louise loved her church and her church family wherever she lived. Active for many years in the WMU, missions was a strong focus of hers. She often incorporated travel experiences and mementos in WMU presentations. She participated once providing child sitting overseas while missionary parents attended a conference. She taught Sunday School for years as well. Louise shared her love of flowers with those she knew that were homebound or in the hospital.
Louise's interests were wide – from traveling to landscape gardening to canning produce from her brother James' garden and other interests. Over the years she painted vases and other decorative pieces, collected crystal bowls and other antiques (oh, she loved the challenge of a good bargaining session). Her love of traveling internationally was shared with each grandchild via a trip wherever they wanted to go so that their perspective of the world would be enriched. On trips, Louise was the one to ride the donkey up a hill in the Holy Land and swim in the Dead Sea.
Louise was the second oldest of six children born to Carl and Janie Powell. Brothers R. Edward and James G. Powell are both deceased. Louise enjoyed get-togethers with her remaining siblings, Betty, Carl, Jr., and Hugh who live in North Carolina, Georgia and Florida.
Louise is survived by her three sons and their wives, Martin (Karen), Ben (Kathy) and William (Michele); eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Louise's son, Steve, died before her. Her beloved family is spread across six states - Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, New York, Alabama and Texas. Louise did her very best to keep them all together and in touch. Her home was the heart of the family.
The family will receive friends at the Visitation on Saturday, March 18, 4:00-6:00 p.m at Strickland Funeral Home located at 305 Cleveland Avenue, Hartwell, GA 30643.
Funeral services will be on Sunday, March 19 at 2:30 p.m. at the Cornerstone Baptist Church, 1543 Anderson Highway, Hartwell, GA 30643. Louise was long-time friends with Pat and Reverend Terry Meeks, and Reverend Meeks will officiate the service. Burial will be in the Sardis Baptist Church Cemetery beside her beloved late husband, Ben, her parents, and her brother, James. Memorials may be made to the Cornerstone Baptist Church - General Fund or the WMU Fund. The Strickland Funeral Home of Hartwell is in charge of all arrangements.
