Mr. Clyde Andrew Long Jr., 83, passed peacefully on Sunday March 12, 2017. He passed promptly at 7 pm surrounded and comforted by his beloved family; leaving a beautiful sunset in his wake that rang true to the saying “red sky at night, sailor’s delight.” Clyde was born on September 11, 1933, to the late Clyde Long Sr. and Gwendolyn Lentz Long. He was born and raised in Winston-Salem, and was a graduate of R.J. Reynolds High School. Clyde attended Davidson College before entering the Army, where he served in Germany from 1954 to 1956. He retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company after 30 years in the Engineering Department. He was dedicated to his family, loved boating, fishing, good food, and Triple S Marina at Atlantic Beach, N.C. He was also a devout man of faith who never left a Sunday service unattended or let a day pass without reading his Bible. Surviving are his wife, Joyce; sister-in-law, Julie Stoakley (husband Lou); brother-in-law, Dick Petree (wife Wanda); nieces and nephews, Lou Ann Stoakley, Lori Barr (husband Todd), Lisa McSwain (husband Trey), Kadie Dooley (husband Dan), Nick Petree (wife Claire); and great nieces and nephews, Drew Lael, Daniel Lael, Kailey McSwain, Ryan McSwain, Evan Barr, and Kadan Dooley. A funeral service will be held at 2pm on Friday, March 17, 2017, at Pine Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Marilyn L. Weiler and Rev. S. Neill Shaw officiating. Interment will follow at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 6-8pm on Thursday, March 16, 2017, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. The family would like to extend their gratitude for the love and support shown by the entire staff of Bermuda Commons and Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Pine Grove Methodist Church, 1130 Jonestown Rd, Winston-Salem, NC 27103 or Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Ln., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
