He was the 8th child of John Henry Mason Jr. (1797-1859), and Catherine Macomb. His paternal great-grandfather was a signer of the Declaration of Independance.

After John joined the Confederate Navy during the American Civil War, his duties included negotiating with Britain and France to supply the south with arms. Upon his return through Canada from his first mission, he was captured visiting family in Detroit.

After the war he left the USA for Egypt and discovered the Semliki R. one of the Nile's tributaries. He became an official in the Kafhir's Egyptian government and negotiated a Treaty with Sudan. He married Sophia Flanagan Hurry Shreve Nov 22, 1890 in Cairo, Egypt. She died in Berlin in 1904. They had no children.
