WHITEWATER — Stratewula “Sug” Wulfkuhle, 91, of Whitewater, formerly of Fort Atkinson, died Friday, March 10, 2017, at Fairhaven Senior Services.
She was born Jan. 22, 1926, to George and Katherine (Haynes) Kehias in Pana, IL.
During her early years, she joined her siblings as members of the Kehias’ family business known as George’s Candy Shop in Pana.
Sug graduated with honors from Pana High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Carthage College in Carthage, IL, in 1948. She completed her master’s degree in physical education from the University of Denver in 1952.
She taught for eight years in Muskegon, MI. During the summer, she was assistant director of a private girls’ camp on Lake Delavan.
Sug then accepted a position as a member of the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the Department of Physical Education. She later was promoted to associate professor before her retirement in 1960.
Sug married Robert “Bob” L. Wulfkuhle on Nov. 5, 1960; they recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary.
The couple was blessed with two children: Gustav R. Wulfkuhle of Geneva, IL, and Trianna R. (Wulfkuhle) Warkentin of Spring, TX. They, in turn, were blessed with two children each: Emily G. Wulfkuhle, Samuel G. Wulfkuhle, Daniel S. Warkentin and Kylie K. Warkentin.
In 1979, Sug was asked to take over the Fort Atkinson Chapter of the American Red Cross’ water safety education effort, which had begun to fall apart after its coordinator stepped down. Despite having two young children at the time, she said “yes” and resurrected the program.
Through 1994, Sug steered everything from lifeguard and water safety instructor classes to First Aid certification and swimming lessons at the former Fort Atkinson High School pool. It is estimated that through the Red Cross, she was responsible for 1,320 aquatic classes that served more than 11,000 people.
Also greatly involved in the School District of Fort Atkinson’s community swimming programs, Sug was instrumental in helping the Fort Atkinson Parks and Recreation Department design the family aquatic center in Rock River Park.
Sug is survived by her husband, Robert “Bob” L. Wulfkuhle; children, Gustav (Cathy) Wulfkuhle and Trianna (Steve) Wulfkuhle Warkentin; her grandchildren, Emily and Samuel Wulfkuhle, and Daniel and Kylie Warkentin; a brother, James Kehias; and a sister, Georgia Hamilton.
Per her wishes, Sug’s body has been donated to the UW-Madison School of Medicine.
A memorial service to celebrate Sug’s life will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday, April 1, at First English Lutheran Church in Whitewater, followed by a meal at Jessica’s Restaurant, located on Main Street in Whitewater.
In lieu of flowers, a gift in memory of Sug may be made to either the Whitewater Aquatic Center or the Fort Atkinson Family Aquatic Center. Condolences may be sent to 877 Acorn Ridge, Whitewater, WI 53190.
Sug’s family wishes to recognize the members of the staff at Hearthstone Memory Care and the staff of the second-floor skilled nursing unit at Fairhaven, all of whom are wonderful, caring people!
